Soft Touch Chiropractic –
Porter Ranch, California

Not every patient wants the same kind of chiropractic adjustment.
Some people prefer a traditional hands-on chiropractic adjustment. Others are more comfortable with a gentle instrument-assisted technique, light mobilization, or a softer approach.
That is the idea behind Soft Touch Chiropractic:
Chiropractic care should be customized to the individual—not the other way around.
At Soft Touch Chiropractic, we evaluate your condition, comfort level, mobility, muscle tension, joint movement, posture, and individual needs before deciding which approach may be appropriate.

What Makes Soft Touch Chiropractic Different?
Soft Touch Chiropractic is not one single chiropractic technique.
It is a patient-centered approach that allows us to select from different chiropractic and joint-mobility methods depending on your needs and preferences.
Our goal is to help improve joint mobility, musculoskeletal function, comfort, and movement while using the level of force appropriate for each individual.
According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, spinal manipulation involves applying a controlled force to a spinal joint and may produce small improvements in pain and function for some people with acute or chronic low-back pain.

One Patient Does Not Fit Every TechniqueSome patients enjoy the traditional chiropractic adjustment and the familiar popping or releasing sound.
Others tell us:
“Doctor, I don't want my back or neck cracked.”
That does not necessarily mean chiropractic care is unavailable to them.
Depending on the patient's examination and health history, we may consider several approaches.
Traditional Chiropractic Adjustment A hands-on chiropractic adjustment uses a controlled force directed toward a specific joint.
The Mayo Clinic explanation of chiropractic adjustment describes chiropractic manipulation as controlled force applied to a spinal joint to improve spinal motion.
For appropriate patients, this may be one option for improving joint mobility and addressing certain musculoskeletal complaints.

Gentle Instrument Chiropractic AdjustmentFor patients who prefer less force, we may use a handheld chiropractic instrument.
Instead of a larger manual movement, the instrument delivers a small, controlled mechanical impulse to a targeted area.
Patients often describe it as a gentle tapping sensation.
This approach may be especially appealing to people who:
  • Prefer a gentler chiropractic technique
  • Are uncomfortable with traditional manipulation
  • Do not like popping or cracking sounds
  • Prefer very targeted treatment
  • Want the chiropractor to begin conservatively
The most appropriate technique depends on your examination, health history, symptoms, and individual circumstances.

Gentle Joint Mobilization and PositioningSome patients prefer an even softer approach.
In those situations, we may use gentle positioning, mobilization, stretching, or other low-force methods designed to encourage comfortable movement of a restricted joint.
The goal is not to force the body.
The goal is to determine what type of care your body tolerates comfortably while still addressing the mechanical problem we identify.

Chiropractic Care Is More Than Hearing a “Pop”The popping sound associated with some chiropractic adjustments is not the treatment itself.
A successful chiropractic visit should be judged by factors such as:
  • Joint mobility
  • Range of motion
  • Muscle balance
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Posture
  • Movement quality
  • Functional improvement
  • The patient's response to care
This is why two patients with similar symptoms may receive different treatments.

What Does Research Say About Chiropractic Care?Research suggests that spinal manipulation can be one of several non-drug treatment options for low-back pain.
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health's review of low-back pain reports evidence that spinal manipulation may help some patients with acute or chronic low-back pain.
Clinical guidelines have also included spinal manipulation among several nondrug options for certain patients with low-back pain.
This does not mean chiropractic treatment is appropriate for every condition or every patient.
A proper health history and examination are important before beginning treatment.

Why We Call It “Soft Touch”The word soft does not mean ineffective.
It means we try to use the appropriate amount of force for the individual patient.
Sometimes a traditional manual adjustment may be appropriate.
Sometimes an instrument-assisted adjustment may be more comfortable.
Sometimes gentle mobilization or positioning may be preferred.
At Soft Touch Chiropractic, you are part of that decision.
We explain the available options and work with you to find an approach that is both clinically appropriate and comfortable.

Chiropractic Care for Back Pain, Neck Pain and Musculoskeletal ProblemsPatients commonly visit chiropractors for problems involving:
  • Low-back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Muscle tightness and stiffness
  • Limited joint mobility
  • Postural problems
  • Sports-related musculoskeletal complaints
  • Work-related strain
  • Certain headaches associated with the neck
  • Pain following an automobile accident
The Mayo Clinic notes that low-back pain, neck pain, and headaches are among the most common reasons people seek chiropractic adjustments.
You can also explore our chiropractic health articles and patient education for more information about back pain, neck pain, posture, injuries, exercise, and conservative care.

Your Comfort MattersOne of the most common concerns new patients have is:
“Will the adjustment hurt?”
Our answer is that chiropractic care should be adapted whenever reasonably possible to your comfort, health history, and condition.
Before treatment, we discuss what we find and what type of approach we recommend.
If you are uncomfortable with a particular chiropractic technique, tell us.
There may be another way to approach the problem.
That conversation is one of the most important parts of Soft Touch Chiropractic.
